Convert Word to PDF

Beta

Turn DOCX documents into PDFs that look the same everywhere.

Layout may differ from Word for text boxes, footnotes and charts.

or drag and drop .docx files here

Your files are processed on this device and never uploaded.

Convert a Word document to PDF for free, without Microsoft Word and without uploading anything. Drop one DOCX or a whole batch, and each document becomes its own PDF with the same page size, margins, fonts, tables, lists, pictures, headers and page numbers. This tool is in Beta: ordinary letters, CVs, reports and forms come out right, and when a file has something we can't draw yet, such as a text box or a chart, the result tells you exactly what was left out.

Why convert Word to PDF here

Pages that match Word

Lines break where Word breaks them, because the layout uses the measurements of the real fonts. Page size, margins and orientation come from the file.

Tables, lists and pictures

Borders, shading, merged cells and repeated header rows, numbered and bulleted lists, tab stops, and JPEG or PNG pictures all carry over.

Headers and page numbers

Headers and footers appear on every page, with "Page 3 of 12" style numbers worked out for the PDF, including a different first page.

Many documents at once

Add a whole folder of DOCX files. Each becomes its own PDF, and several download together as one ZIP with a list of every file.

Honest Beta notes

If a document has text boxes, charts, footnotes or pictures we can't draw yet, its row says what was left out, so nothing goes missing silently.

Converted on your device

Your browser reads the document and writes the PDF. Nothing is uploaded, so contracts, CVs and payslips stay with you.

How do I convert a Word document to PDF?

Drop one or more .docx files into the box above and click “Convert to PDF”. Each document is laid out page by page and saved as a PDF with the same name. With one file you download the PDF straight away. With several, you get one ZIP holding every PDF, and the list under the result shows each file with its page count and its own download button.

You don’t need Microsoft Word, an account or an app. The tool works in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone. The PDF opens the same way on every device, which is the point of sending a PDF instead of a DOCX: the reader sees your pages as you made them, without needing your fonts or your version of Word.

Tip: Before converting a CV or a cover letter, check that the file ends in .docx and not .doc. If it is an older .doc file, open it in Word or Google Docs and choose “Save as” .docx first.

What does the PDF keep from my document?

The converter reads the page size, orientation and margins of every section, so a landscape table in the middle of a portrait report stays landscape. Paragraph spacing, indents, alignment and justified text follow the document’s styles, and lines break where Word breaks them because the layout measures text with the widths of the real fonts: Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New are matched closely.

Bulleted and numbered lists keep their numbering, including multi-level lists such as 1.1 and 1.2. Tables keep their column widths, borders, cell shading, merged cells and row heights, and a header row marked to repeat appears again at the top of each new page. Tab stops with dot leaders, page breaks, pictures in JPEG or PNG, and headers and footers with page numbers like “Page 2 of 9” are all drawn. JPEG photos are copied into the PDF as they are, so they don’t lose quality.

What are the Beta limits?

This is a Beta, and it is better to be plain about what it doesn’t do yet. Text boxes, charts, SmartArt graphics and drawn shapes are not converted. Footnotes and endnotes show their reference number but not the note text. Pictures that float beside text are placed where the document puts them, but the text doesn’t wrap around them. Pictures saved in older formats such as EMF or WMF appear as a gray box. Tables with a single row taller than a page, multi-column page layouts and right-to-left scripts are not handled well either.

When a file has any of these, its row in the result says so, for example “2 text boxes could not be converted”, so you know which PDF to check. Documents in fonts we have no measurements for, such as Aptos, Segoe UI or Georgia, are drawn with a close standard font, and a line can break a word earlier or later than in Word.

Is it safe to convert Word to PDF online?

It is, with this tool, because your document is never uploaded. You open the page online, but the reading, the layout and the PDF writing all happen in your browser, on your own phone or computer. No copy of the file, its name or its text is sent to a server, and nothing is stored after you close the page.

That matters for the documents people convert most: contracts, CVs, offer letters, payslips and school work. After the first use, the converter also keeps working without an internet connection, which is handy on a train or with patchy mobile data. Letters outside Western European languages, such as Greek or Cyrillic, need a small font download the first time a document uses them.

Questions answered

How do I convert a Word document to PDF without Microsoft Word?

Add the DOCX file above and click "Convert to PDF". Your browser lays the document out and saves a PDF, with no Word installation, no account and no watermark. It works on a phone as well as on a computer.

Will my PDF look exactly like the Word document?

For most everyday documents, yes. Letters, CVs, reports, lists and tables keep their page size, margins, line breaks and page numbers. This is a Beta, so text boxes, charts, SmartArt and footnote text are not drawn yet, and fonts we have no measurements for can break lines a little differently. Each file's note tells you when that happened.

Can I convert several Word files to PDF at once?

Yes. Add as many DOCX files as you like. Each one becomes its own PDF, and they download together as one ZIP. Under the result you see every file with its page count, and you can download any single PDF from that list.

Why does it say my .doc file is an older Word format?

Files ending in .doc use the binary format from Word 97 to 2003, which this tool does not read. Open the file in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, and add it again.

Can I convert a password-protected Word document?

Not while it is locked. Open it in Word, remove the password under File, Info, Protect Document, save it, and then convert it here. If you want the PDF itself protected, use Protect PDF afterwards.

Is it safe to convert confidential Word documents online?

Here it is, because the document is never uploaded. The page loads once, then the conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device. It keeps working without a connection after the first use, and no copy of your file or its text is sent anywhere.
